On DEXTER (which airs its season finale on Sunday night), Michael C. Hall’s serial killer protagonist has lots of problems. One of these would be Miami police detective Joey Quinn, played by Desmond Harrington. Quinn is the partner and sometimes lover of Dexter’s sister Debra (Jennifer Carpenter) – and he’s also the one person at the station who thinks there’s something not quite right about the newly-widowed blood spatter expert.

Harrington takes five with ASSIGNMENT X regarding his suspicious character, his appearance on GOSSIP GIRL and playing a cop.

TAKE 1:
Season Four of DEXTER was pretty traumatic for a lot of characters. Dexter of course found his wife Rita dead in a pool of blood and has spent this season dealing with it. However, your character, Detective Joey Quinn, doesn’t seem overly upset that his girlfriend turned out to be the daughter of the Trinity Killer, a murderer herself and that she wound up shooting herself.

“We came back right where we left off [in the storyline, but], that’s a wrap on that in terms of the relationship,” says Harrington. “I think basically time has passed for that next. I don’t think Quinn is much of a griever. Basically, my character is, in terms of this season, on the trail of [trying to learn why Rita’s murder] happened at Dexter’s house and [finds] that [Dexter] resembles a sketch of Kyle Butler that we get from Trinity’s family, so this gives me a reason to investigate, whereas everybody else doesn’t want to look into the possibility of Dexter possibly killing his wife.

TAKE 2:
Would you say that Quinn is picking up the mantle of the late Doakes, who was Dexter’s police department nemesis in the first and second seasons?

“Yeah, in a much more circuitous way,” Harrington says. “I’m not as in his face, let’s say. Where it originally starts is that Dexter saw me steal money last season and he refuses to take any sort of bribe or kindness that I offer him. So from there, it becomes an irritation for me and I begin to pay more attention to him and notice certain oddities about his character and about his behavior. Whereas Doakes was relentless and sort of in his face, I think we have moments of little wise-ass-ness, but in general, it’s not the same sort of thing.

TAKE 3:
Are you becoming more comfortable with playing a cop as the seasons go on?

“You know, I grew up and a lot of the people I grew up around were cops, so I understand the blue-collar world fairly well and cops and robbers are sort of my forte,” says Harrington. “I can do those two things pretty well.”

TAKE 4:
Did you do any other acting work during your last DEXTER’s hiatus?

“I did GOSSIP GIRL again,” he says. “I did it two years in a row. I’m Chuck Bass’ uncle and I kind of come in and ruin this kid’s life every season. That’s pretty much what I do on this show.”

TAKE 5:
Since DEXTER’s original show runner Clyde Phillips is now gone on to other projects, did you perceive any difference in the tone of the show or in the way it’s run this season?

“No, not really,” says Harrington. “[New show runner] Chip Johannessen’s doing a really fantastic job. Chip – I think he brought in Manny Coto and Ken Leonard and they did a great job. It’s a great season.”

People of the world, here’s something to make you feel good: Dexter‘s Debra Morgan has way worse luck in relationships than you. No, really…unless you’ve dated a serial killer, a man who slowly died in front of you and a guy who is “definitely in trouble” thanks to your psychopathic brother.

We just chatted up Deb’s latest conquest,Dexter‘s Desmond Harrington, for scoop on the final two episodes of the Showtime hit, and be forewarned: we are deeply concerned about what’s coming up for Quinn…

MORE: Dexter Picked Up for a Sixth Season

“Quinn is in trouble,” Desmond tells us. “I think in this Sunday’s episode you see a drop of blood hit my foot, and I’m definitely in trouble in [the season finale].”

That doesn’t sound good at all, does it?

We’ve seen this Sunday’s episode and can tell you the blood is most definitely hitting the fan—and we’re not sure how Quinn’s going to get out of it.

Desmond can’t comment whether he’ll be a part of the rumored (our sources confirm it’s happening) sixth season of Dexter, but he will say he’s pretty sure there won’t be a cliffhanger for Quinn.

He’s also loving being in love with Deb (Jennifer Carpenter) this season. “It’s real. I think maybe early on in the year he was in this to get information on Dexter [but] that’s definitely not the case now. He is actually in love with her…He definitely has softened up a lot. I honestly like that he’s a little softer and basically he’s fallen in love with this girl.”

Quinn also seems alarmingly close to figuring out Dexter’s big secret—that he is the “vigilante” murderer Deb is hunting. And that can’t end in a good place…or can it?  ”In terms of accepting what Dexter does,” Desmond says, “honestly I don’t think [Quinn] would have a problem with this idea of justice being served the way that Dexter does it…Quinn more or less has a code of his own. I feel like he is very much a cop that would go to bat for other cops. And not necessarily in the best means.”

And if you like your Desmond a little darker, good news: Gossip Girl producers have asked him to reprise his role as Jack Bass around February. Bring on the Basshole! Then, Dexter producers, you best bring him back to your awesome little Showtime show for season six. Poor Deb can’t take any more heartache, and neither can we.

3. Desmond Harrington, Law & Order: Criminal Intent(“Vacancy,” 2006)

Before Gossip Girl and Dexter, Desmond Harrington stepped into the role of Tim Rainey, a cab driver and would-be actor who happened to take Method acting a little too far – into murder. It’s a role that could easily become over the top in the wrong hands, but Harrington (who’s been down this role before, having played the bad guy in horror films Ghost Ship and Love Object) mixes his natural charm with just enough quirkiness; as much as I naturally adore the actor, I could feel that there were screws loose with the character from moment one. There was another layer as well; Tim had a wife and child that he loved dearly, which added a heartwrenching aspect to seeing him arrested and put away. I knew he had it coming, but at the same time, I could feel his confusion and desperation, and felt for him on some level.

Trivia buffs will remember that Harrington was on the right side of the law two years earlier, when he was a regular as Detective Jimmy McCarron in Dick Wolf’s update of Dragnet, entitled L.A. Dragnet. The show only lasted two seasons, but his performance was one of the bright spots of the dismal remake.

Speaking of “Law and Order” regulars I have to add that today I added more screen captures and clips to another site of mine. This site is for New York actor “Neal Bledsoe”. Similar to Desmond, not only has he been in two Law and Orders but also a CSI. Check out his work at one of my other websites Neal Bledsoe Online (it is under construction so excuse the look).

Desmond has two scenes. One where he licks Leighton, and another where he and Ed are talking and Leighton trips in the background.

It’ll be a little while until I get these on the site (gallery and downloadable clips) becauise my computer is complete crap. I’ve been saving up for a new one so hopefully in a month or two I’ll have TONS of new stuff for you all. Much Love!
